Will Distancing Themselves From J.K. Rowling Be Enough To Save W.B. Game's Harry Potter RPG

I’m sure since the very first Harry Potter game, people have thought of what it would be like to have an open-world Harry Potter roleplaying game. There’s only so many times we can play the same story over and over regardless if they convert it into a fun Lego game or an augmented reality game where we play with potions. It’s always been in the back of all our minds to have an open-world Wizard World experience.

Now, we finally have confirmation of a single-player open-world Harry Potter RPG, and what does J.K. Rowling, the creator behind the series, do? She murks it all up by making unapologetic comments about gender.

Why J.K.?

Maybe you should take your initials to heart and actually just be kidding. How could you possibly leave the people who have grown up in your universe behind with your inflammatory comments? Not only that, but she also took the time to sit down and write out a whole essay about her opinions. It’s no wonder the movie stars are taking a step back while crossing both index fingers to form an X and distancing themselves from J.K.

Warner Bros. Games is trying to do the same thing by confirming J.K. Rowling had nothing to do with the game. Unfortunately, it’s still her property. Despite conflicting reports of whether or not she’s getting paid, I’m sure she will see some coin from the sales.

The developers themselves? They’ve already been paid for the game. Not supporting the game financially won’t hurt their pockets, but they’re still the creative types. They put time and effort into fleshing out a vast and open wizarding world only for J.K. Rowling to make uncomfortably transphobic comments as they were wrapping production. The comments were very demeaning and killed the magic the Harry Potter series had in many of our hearts.

Warner Bros. Games are trying to distance themselves from her, but J.K. Rowling will still see some monetary benefit from the sales at the end of the day. While there’s still no release date, the game is rumored to be released sometime in 2021. That gives her time to get her act together and make an apology to everyone she’s alienated and not make the developer’s work a complete waste of time.
