343 Industries have been the developers behind the Halo franchise since Halo 4 in 2012, dropped a bomb on Halo fans when they delayed the flagship game for the next-generation Xbox. Yes, the next-generation Xbox Series X console will be released without a Halo title. This will undoubtedly affect sales of the Xbox Series X later this year. There may even be hardcore fans of the console lost to the PlayStation 5.
Many believed Halo Infinite was delayed because of the ongoing global pandemic, but because the game looked absolutely terrible. It would have been understandable to say the game was postponed due to the novel coronavirus. Still, they made the mistake of showcasing gameplay that the internet decided to tear apart. That’s just what the internet does. The graphics for the game somehow looked worse than a Halo game released two generations of Xbox consoles ago. It was embarrassing, to say the least. Fortunately, there are still some who are interested in the next Halo’s story.
When Does Halo Infinite Take Place?
The Halo series has mostly showcased the ever-popular Master Chief character. This fictional and faceless protagonist has shown up in Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo: 5 Guardians. This iconic character gets around, and it looks like he’s making his return in Halo Infinite.
The previous Halo title in the main series, Halo 5: Guardians, takes place eight months after Halo 4. Master Chief leads a squad of Spartan-II teammates instead of easily killable Marines in the game. Since losing Cortana in Halo 4, Master Chief has put finding her above all else, including direct orders from superiors. Of course, because the writers needed to switch things up a bit, they turned Cortana evil.
Halo Infinite looks like it’s going to take place after the events of Halo 5: Guardians. That means the big baddie of the game might not be heretic elites, but Cortana herself. Rumors are going around that Halo Infinite might be an open-world game compared to the linear storylines of all the previous titles. This will make exploring the new luscious landscapes showcased on the Xbox Series X more immersive.
Master Chief, shown in the Halo Infinite trailer, also looks to have a new AI companion. Is it another female companion talking into his ear as Cortana used to be? It’s going to be interesting to see where the story takes Master Chief. Is he looking for Cortana? Will he be fighting her forces? Will there be new enemies other than the Convenent and Forerunners? There has been word that Halo Infinite will be a soft reboot of the series, so maybe they’ll take the story in a completely different direction entirely. Perhaps the AI shown in the Halo Infinite trailer is Cortana, and they are completely disregarding the events of Halo 5: Guardians.
Only time will tell. Unfortunately, we have to wait a little longer because they didn’t focus on graphics.
