Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is around the corner, and its place in the timeline couldn’t be any odder. Yes, Treyarch is bringing us another Black Ops title after an almost disappointing fifth installment that was named “Black Ops 4.” We’re getting a little lost in Black Ops’ continuity. Adding zombies didn’t help us in our confusion, but it was a welcome feature of the Black Ops series.
Speaking of the timeline, despite being the sixth installment of the Black Ops series coming right after four, Black Ops Cold War is the direct sequel to the first Call of Duty: Black Ops. Confused yet? Well, fortunately, you’ll be able to see for yourself as the campaign mode is making a comeback. Yes, Treyarch has given in to the backlash of not having a campaign mode in Black Ops 4 and will tell a story based on the Cold War of the 1980s. It’s most likely because they’re co-developing Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with another developer, Raven Software. The president over at the publisher, Activision, also hinted there’s going to be a connection between the recent Modern Warfare title. Normally, the Black Ops and Modern Warfare titles are separate entities, so it will be interesting to see how they connect the two.
Speaking of the campaign, Treyarch and Raven aren’t just bringing back the campaign mode, but they’re bringing it back with some razzle-dazzle. It will be a massive campaign mode, which will satisfy the burning anger from those who missed having a campaign mode in Black Ops 4. Since this is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops from 2010, we will see the same characters, Jason Hudson, Frank Mason, and Alex Woods. Also, since it’s based on historical events, there will be some real-life historical figures such as Ronald Reagen. Black Ops Cold War is sure to be the “what if” for historical events. It’s going to be interesting to see what could have happened has the Cold War turned into a full-fledged war.
Now, let’s take a look at the multiplayer. The best part about what’s confirmed so far with the multiplayer mode is Black Ops Cold War will have cross-platform play. That means Xbox players could play with PlayStation players. What’s even better is, there will also be cross-generational play. That means Xbox One players can play with PlayStation 5 players. There are so many different combinations, it’s an exciting concept.
Finally, the best part about the Black Ops series, Zombies, is making a return. There’s not much information about the zombies’ mode, but that’s a significant selling point for the game itself.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will drop on current and next-generation consoles in November 2020.
