COVID-19 has thrown everything into disarray, but companies are finding ways to get creative about keeping their presence known. Unfortunately, San Diego Comic-Con never happened because of the global pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped DC from figuring out how to make announcements. DC started an event called “Fandome” where they unveiled everything from movies to video game news. One of the first and most significant announcements was a new action-adventure open-world title: Gotham Knights.
In Gotham Knights, Bruce Wayne has died, and the other bat-themed heroes of Gotham must step up in his absence. Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood are all playable characters in Gotham Knights. Fortunately, Bruce Wayne left his former teammates with all of his assets as well as Alfred. Gotham Knights will be an open-world game, meaning it’s going to feel like Sony PlayStation’s Spider-Man from Marvel. There was an almost 8-minute trailer showing the official gameplay of Gotham Knights following Batgirl as she and Robin try to take on Mr. Freeze. Even though Batman is gone, his villains are still around and terrorizing Gotham. What’s worse is that they will eventually figure out that Batman is dead and more villains will come out of the woodwork. All we know is Mr. Freeze, and the Court of Owls will be in the game.
The best feature revealed in the gameplay trailer was the co-op feature. That means gamers will be able to play with their friends in their own fantasy superhero team-up. This is something Marvel’s Spiderman wasn’t able to accomplish. Each hero looks like they’re going to have a specialty and game style. For example, playing Robin will be different than playing Batgirl. The co-op for Gotham Knights is rumored to be drop-in co-op. That means you can play alone or alongside an AI, but when a friend joins, they automatically take control of the second character.
Gotham Knights also debuted alongside a Suicide Squad video game by Rocksteady named “Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.” It looks like both games won’t be released in 2020 with the current or next-generation consoles, but they should release in 2021 with the new PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League may release later in 2022 since it’s not as far along as Gotham Knights. We’re looking forward to seeing how the villains of Gotham react when they learn of Bruce Wayne’s death and if the Bat-family can fill in in his absence.
