New Pokémon Snap has been announced for the Nintendo Switch.

The Pokémon Company held its Pokémon Presents broadcast earlier today and announced that it will be releasing New Pokémon Snap, a sequel to the original 1999 game Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo 64 console.

Rather than catching Pokémon, New Pokémon Snap involves taking pictures of various Pokémon in their natural habitat. Some of the locations the game will whisk players to include jungles, beaches, and plenty more.

The photos taken by players will be used to build up a Photodex which works similarly to the Pokedex from the original games, and players will be able to discover new and “never-before-seen Pokémon expressions and behaviours” through the photos.

A description of the game released by The Pokémon Company reads: “The New Pokémon Snap game for the Nintendo Switch is based on its namesake, which was first released for the Nintendo 64 console in 1999.

“This game will take Trainers on an adventure to unknown islands overflowing with natural sights such as jungles and beaches, where they can research various Pokémon in their natural habitats. They will take photos to make their very own in-game Pokémon Photodex, all while discovering new, never-before-seen Pokémon expressions and behaviours.”

The Pokémon Company hasn’t announced an official release date but they have revealed that the game is being developed by Bandai Namco Studios.

What Else Was Announced At The Pokémon Stream?

In addition to New Pokémon Snap, the Pokémon Company also announced Pokémon Smile which is a new smartphone app to encourage children to brush their teeth. The company also announced Pokémon Café Mix, a free-to-play puzzle game for the Nintendo Switch and smartphone devices where players must match icons to run a successful business.

The puzzles in Pokémon Café Mix involve preparing dishes or drinks for customers. Pokémon will act as customers in the game but players are also able to hire them in the kitchen and use their special abilities to solve puzzles and other challenges. As players progress, the café will expand to feature new areas and other features. Although no release date was officially announced, the Pokémon Company states that the game will be available “soon”.

Popular smartphone app Pokémon Go will receive mega evolutions, a temporary evolution for Pokémon that is used in battle. The mechanic was first introduced in the sixth generation of games and there are currently on 46 species of Pokémon that can mega evolve. Unfortunately, no information on how the mechanic works was shared during the presentation and The Pokémon Company did not state which evolution forms will be featured within the app.

The Pokémon Company also confirmed that Victini will be added to the app later this year and that Galarian Farfetch’d and other avatar items have launched to celebrate the release of the first expansion for Pokémon Sword And Shield.

Finally, The Pokémon Company made an announcement for a second Pokémon Presents video for next week where the company will reportedly unveil their next project.
