It’s time for another mission in the post-Shadowbringers story. I’m moving through the MSQ at the rate of the sloth from the Zootopia movies. I’ll do one mission a week, then spend the rest of the time paying Square Enix real-life money to stand around and look pretty.
The title of this mission, “Old Enemies, New Threats,” only makes me assume I’m cooperating with someone I used to hate. However, the person I speak to first is Maxima. Despite his history in the Empire, I could never hate this man. In fact, I spent some time in GPOSE with him because he deserves as much.
Fortunately, after speaking with him, he brings me into a room where Gaius awaits.
It’s not a fortunate meeting, canonically, for our WoL’s because of what they’ve gone through doing MSQ roulette for years and listening to this man ramble on endlessly as we curb-stomped him on an endless elevator. Our WoL assumes their threatening cutscene stance of putting one foot forward. Whenever she does this, I have the voice of an Australian documentary narrator saying, “When threatened, the WoL puts one foot forward to assert their dominance.”
After going on about his escape with Estinien, he tells us what we already knew: The Empire is developing a new Ultima Weapon. Is there seriously no other super-powered Machina-type weapon in the Final Fantasy series?
I found it funny that Krile interjects at this point to remind Gaius that it’s the same monstrosity he once believed in because some creepy dudes in robes told him to.
Despite him wanting to make amends by offering to fight the weapon alongside you, our WoL stands there replaying every word he’s ever said in the Praetorium. Every hurtful world, Gaius.
After Gaius makes his leave, Krile turns to us and tells us that we must make a decision as to who we’re helping. Save Eorzea by fighting against the new Ultima Weapon prototype (since, clearly, a bunch of NPCs won’t get the job done, they can’t even clear FATEs on their own) or stand there and look pretty as smarter people figure out how to bring their souls back via crystals.
What decision will our WoL make? Stay tuned for the next post.
