Fatal Frame Poised For Return To The Horror Spotlight

Back in the PS2 era of gaming, horror gaming was arguably at its peak. The number of active, brilliant horror IP’s were high, the games themselves were super and there were some games that offered truly unique stories and mechanics. One of which was the Fatal Frame series, or Forbidden Siren in European regions. This game seen players control a young girl as she searched for her lost brother with only a camera to protect herself from the ethereal spirits. It was a truly unique game and in 2021, its back!

Maiden of the Black Water, a very positively received game in the series from 2014 is set to be re-released on modern platforms. Allowing new generations of players and perhaps those that missed it in 2014 to play on both PS4 and PS5 as well as the Nintendo Switch. Its excellent news for horror fans but it could soon get much better. This game will release on the 28th of October on all mentioned platforms and all those that pre-order this game will receive exclusive in-game costumes and full access to DLC content later down the line.

Fatal Frame Set for A Triumphant Return?

According to Keisuke Kikuchi in a recent interview with Japanese magazine, Famitsu. He would be very open to a brand new release in the series and this will depend on the success and reception of Maiden of the Black Water’s re-release. He was even quoted saying “We would love this to lead to a new title.”

This re-release is a celebration of the series as it commemorates its 20th Anniversary with this event, allowing fans to enjoy a brilliant horror title on modern systems. While this does not serve by any means as a clear cut announcement, it is a sign of intent from the Fatal Frame team. There is a cult following for this series and it seems that if this can translate to a wider audience, this would be the green light that the development team need to make some new content. We suppose only time will tell.

So that’s our news regarding the Fatal Frame re-release and the potential new title in the series. What do you make of the news? Have you played any of these horror games before?
