Smudge sticks in Phasmophobia are meant to get players out of sticky situations when the ghost starts hunting. Have you ever held a smudge stick, saw your flashlight flicker to indicate a hunt, hear the ghost walk-up near you, light a smudge stick, and die anyway? The first thing you’ll wonder is if you didn’t light the smudge stick in time or if the smudge stick is bugged. Let’s go through a couple of questions to see if the smudge stick bugged out and cost you your life.
Did You Bring A Lighter?
To use the smudge stick, you need to have a lighter in your inventory too. The smudge stick and lighter take two inventory slots. If you’re playing on mouse and keyboard, you activate the smudge stick by pressing F if you also have a lighter.
Was The Ghost Nearby?
The ghost needs to be within 6 meters for the smudge stick to take effect. If a hunt begins, and the smudge stick is lit within 6 meters of the ghost, then the ghost will stop hunting for 6 seconds (90 seconds if the ghost is a Yurei). Lighting a smudge stick down the hall if the ghost is on the other end of the hall will still get you killed if the ghost catches up to you.
How Do You Know If The Smudge Stick Is Bugged In Phasmophobia?
If the smudge stick:
- Doesn’t activate, even with a lighter.
- Falls through the floor when dropped.
- Disappears while in the player’s hand.
You might be dealing with a bugged smudge stick.
There are bound to be a few bugs to work out while Phasmophobia is still in its early access phase. However, before you report a bugged smudge stick to the developer, try a couple of things on your end:
- Restart your game.
- Open Steam and verify the game files.
- Make sure you’re connected to the internet.
